The dependence of minors on social media is a critical issue that will be raised at the Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council to be held on Friday in Brussels, Minister of Digital Governance Dimitris Papastergiou said in an interview with Action TV on Wednesday.
The minister underlined that he will also ask for joint initiatives to address the problem.
He spoke of “an addiction to algorithms and screens,” saying that this was a major issue that must be immediately dealt with. “Europe must immediately take measures. It requires a common path, a coalition so that platforms are aware, based on the content, of the material someone is browsing, whether someone is a minor or not.”
The minister also added that “the material should be age appropriate for the users. If this cannot be done, a ban must be imposed, but a ban from the side of the providers and not by each individual country, which cannot deal with this alone.”
