Michael Rigas has been appointed as the Deputy U.S. Secretary of State, a role in which he brings extensive experience in public administration and organizational management. With over two decades of service in both public and private sectors, Rigas is poised to play a significant role in shaping U.S. foreign policy and enhancing the Department of State’s operations.
Before his appointment, Rigas served as the Deputy Director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM), where he was instrumental in advancing the President’s Management Agenda. His work focused on improving government services and ensuring efficient management of federal resources. Additionally, he held the position of Acting Deputy Director for Management at the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), where he played a crucial role in optimizing federal performance and overseeing management initiatives that streamlined government operations.
Rigas’s career also includes leadership roles at the General Services Administration (GSA) and the Massachusetts Department of Veterans’ Services. His private sector experience, including positions at Mellon Financial Corporation and Brown Brothers Harriman & Co., has further strengthened his expertise in organizational leadership and strategic planning.
Holding a Master’s in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, along with both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Economics from Boston University, Rigas combines an academic foundation with practical experience to drive effective governance and diplomatic efforts.
In his new role as Deputy Secretary of State, Rigas is expected to leverage his vast experience to support the Department’s mission, focusing on enhancing U.S. diplomatic initiatives and improving the overall performance of foreign policy operations.
