From October 10 to 13, the National Hellenic Society (NHS) hosted its unforgettable 2024 Heritage Weekend & Classic at the luxurious J.W. Marriott in Nashville, Tennessee. This year’s theme, “Homeward Bound,” honored the rich legacy of Greek-American culture and its deep connections to Greece, focusing on the NHS Heritage Greece Program and the ongoing campaign to repatriate the Parthenon Marbles.
A hallmark of this year’s celebration was the prestigious Excellence Awards Ceremony, held at the iconic Parthenon replica in Centennial Park, Nashville. This stunning structure, a full-scale replica of the Parthenon in Athens, also houses a remarkable sculpture of Athena, mirroring the majesty of the original temple. The evening recognized three exceptional individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to Greek heritage and culture.
Honoring Pioneers of Greek-American Legacy
Peter Parthenis Sr., the founder and chairman of Pure Mediterranean Foods and Grecian Delight Foods, received accolades for his lifetime of leadership and dedication. As Vice-Chairman of the National Hellenic Museum, Parthenis has been instrumental in preserving and promoting Greek culture across generations. His business endeavors have shaped the Greek food industry, bringing the flavors of Greece to the American palate.
Acclaimed actress Melina Kanakaredes, known for her captivating performances on stage and screen, was also honored. A role model for the Greek-American community, Kanakaredes has consistently brought Greek pride to her work, highlighting the vibrancy of Hellenic culture in the arts.

In a groundbreaking moment, legendary songwriter and producer Desmond Child became the inaugural recipient of the NHS Philhellene Award of Excellence. Child, a passionate advocate for Greek culture, has used his global platform to raise awareness of the Parthenon Marbles through his remarkable concert, Desmond Child Rocks the Parthenon, held at the historic Herodion Theater in Athens. With performances from musical icons like Alice Cooper, Rita Wilson, and Sakis Rouvas, Child’s efforts to shine a spotlight on the Marbles resonate worldwide.

A Night of Music and Memories
The evening, emceed by television host and journalist Debbie Matenopoulos, was filled with magic and meaning. NHS’s commitment to honoring Philhellenes within its mission was evident in every moment, with each honoree receiving an original portrait created by artist Rip Kastaris. These portraits, in collaboration with the National Hellenic Museum, will be permanently displayed in the museum’s Portraits in Excellence exhibit, ensuring the legacy of these remarkable individuals for generations to come.
Desmond Child was also presented with a stunning sculpture from renowned artist George Petrides— a bust of Thalia, the Muse of music, poetry, and dance—symbolizing his profound contributions to the arts.

As the evening drew to a close, the audience was treated to a breathtaking musical performance by Kanakaredes’ daughter, Karina Eleni, alongside singer-songwriter Tabitha Fair and NHS honoree Desmond Child. Together, they performed “Lady Liberty,” a song written by Child for Barbra Streisand, enveloping the evening in a powerful blend of music and cultural pride.
This Heritage Weekend was a celebration not only of remarkable individuals but of the enduring bond between Greek Americans and their heritage. The NHS’s work, highlighted by the 2024 Heritage Weekend, underscores the strength and vibrancy of Greek culture, ensuring that it continues to inspire and shape the world for generations to come.
