Washington, DC – January 24, 2025 – The longstanding tradition of Greek Orthodox Archbishops participating in the Inauguration of the President of the United States and recognizing influential Greek-American leaders in the incoming administration continued this year, marking another historic moment for the community.
For the 60th Presidential Inauguration held on January 20th, His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros, the Greek Orthodox Archbishop of America, was invited to sit behind President-elect Donald Trump during his swearing-in ceremony, alongside other distinguished leaders. When the ceremony was moved indoors due to weather, Archbishop Elpidophoros was among the few select non-government officials invited to witness the historic event inside the U.S. Capitol Building.
The following morning, Archbishop Elpidophoros was invited to attend the Inaugural Presidential Prayer Service, where he had the honor of greeting President Trump and Vice President JD Vance as they arrived for the service.
On the eve of the Presidential Inauguration, the Greek-American community once again gathered in celebration, honoring Greek-American officials and leaders serving in the incoming administration. The event recognized prominent figures such as Archon John Catsimatidis, Deputy Secretary of State-designate Michael Rigas, White House Science and Technology Policy Director-designate Michael Kratsios, Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis, and Nevada Lieutenant Governor Stavros Anthony. Each honoree was awarded the Medal of St. Paul, the highest honor for a layperson in the Greek Orthodox Church, presented by Archbishop Elpidophoros.
Special guest, U.S. Ambassador to Greece-designate Kimberly Guilfoyle, also attended and offered remarks, celebrating the achievements of the honorees and the influence of the Greek-American community in shaping American politics and culture.
This year’s event follows a proud history of Greek-American involvement in Presidential Inaugurations. During the 2017 Inauguration, honored individuals included White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, Congressman Gus Bilirakis, and White House Director of Advance George Gigicos. In the 2013 Presidential Inauguration, Dennis Mehiel, Jim Chanos, and George Tsunis were recognized, with Vice President Joe Biden and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi in attendance. The 2009 Inauguration also honored Eleni Tsakopoulos Kounalakis and Alexi Giannoulias for their contributions to public service.
This tradition underscores the pivotal role of the Greek-American community at the highest levels of government, highlighting their continued contributions and influence in shaping the future of the United States.
