Our President was determined to hold another UN-sponsored meeting this week in Nicosia with the Turkish Cypriot leader Mr Tatar, to discuss the possibility of opening more crossings. However—just like in New York—he was humiliated by Ankara’s puppet: “he was not prepared to make any such decisions”.
Unsurprisingly, the meeting ended in failure as citizens had expected! In defence of his disappointment, President Chrystodoulides announced that he presented eight new proposals for consideration. Yet, he refused to disclose or explain to the people what those proposals entail.
In a Democracy, Transparency and Public Accountability is fundamental! Voters loaned their vote to Mr Chrystodoulides and elected him to govern the nation on their behalf —but not to make decisions behind their backs— Citizens have the Right to Know!
Why does the president insist on talking to Mr Tatar and dignify his inglorious political status? Why not close all the crossings and introduce a pragmatic new national defense policy in the interest of Cyprus and abandon our subservience to EU and other foreign interests?
Time is of the essence…and the longer we fail to act decisively, the greater the risk of partitioning Cyprus!
