Geopolitical developments in view of the announced tariffs of the new US President Donald Trump were the main topic of the first panel of the Economist’s discussion on “The World of 2025” held in Athens.
The first panel of the discussion was joined by Harvard University economics professor Kenneth Rogoff, Navios Maritime chairman and CEO Angeliki Frangou, and the founder and chairman of Capital Maritime & Trading Corp. Evangelos Marinakis.
Frangou, referring to developments in shipping for 2025, said that important geopolitical issues such as the war in Ukraine, Israel-Iran tensions, and Houthi attacks in the Red Sea will have to be resolved, and of course, tariffs.
Marinakis said that when there are terrorists, there can be no deal, appreciating that it is in everyone’s interest to avoid crossing the Red Sea, as he stressed that “it is a risk we don’t need to take.” On the issue of the previously announced US tariffs, Marinakis expressed optimism that there can be partial, but with an appropriate solution, as he stressed that the American president is a businessman and wants to protect the interests of the United States.
For his part, Rogoff, referring to the issue of tariffs, underlined that it was the biggest promise of the US president in his election campaign, and he believes it. He stressed that a blanket tariff cannot be imposed on everything.
