Continuous earthquakes above 4.0 on the Richter scale have been recorded over the last days in the sea region between the islands of Santorini and Amorgos.
“There is an increased risk. We do not deny it and we will continue to do so until further notice,” the president of the Greece’s Earthquake Planning & Protection Organisation (OASP), Professor Efthymios Lekkas, told reporters on Monday morning from Santorini.
Lekkas announced that the relevant committees will convene again at 13:00 to examine the situation.
However, he underlined there is no correlation between the seismic activity northeast of Santorini and the activity observed in the volcano area.
“We are 15 Greek scientists here and we all agree on that,” the professor emphasized.
He added that “the situation has not changed and we cannot say that it will end immediately. It will take a few weeks.”
He also mentioned that the greater the distance of the epicenter from Santorini, the more positive it is for the island.
