Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni, during her official visit to London, assured the international media in a series of interviews that Santorini is safe and absolutely ready to welcome visitors for the new tourist season.
The tourism minister gave interviews to leading British and international media, including: The Telegraph, Daily Mail, The Financial Times, BBC Radio 4, Monocle Radio and CGTN.
“Santorini and the neighbouring islands are safe and the infrastructure is functioning normally. Visitors should feel confident that they can visit them,” she said, noting: “I visited Santorini earlier this week and I can tell you that the island remains unique and attractive.”
Kefalogianni pointed out that the state prioritised the safety of citizens from the first moment that the increased seismic activity was recorded in early February. “Now the scientists have given us the green light, the residents have returned to the island and professionals from all sectors are preparing for the current season. Santorini is ready to welcome visitors,” she added.
The minister also referred to the sustainable development strategy implemented in popular destinations. “It is an issue that we take seriously, but not something that we have had problems with, because we have made sure to introduce a multitude of measures to help manage visitors at peak times, at specific times and in specific destinations.”
As she pointed out, “we also saw that we were winning the bet of expanding tourism outside the peak summer season, as we had record numbers of visitors in October and November 2024.”
Kefalogianni also referred at length to the overall strategy of the ministry of tourism for the sustainable development of Greek tourism, highlighting the innovative and pioneering global hotel classification system based on sustainability criteria and their environmental footprint.
At the same time, she underlined the use of digital technologies, such as artificial intelligence, which ensures modern, personalised and useful services to visitors, mentioning the digital application “mAiGreece” for mobile devices, available since last summer, which substantially contributes to upgrading the travel experience in Greece.
Finally, she referred to the upgrading of the country’s digital presence with projects that have already been launched, such as the complete redesign of the official travel portal visitgreece.gr, as well as the development of digital platforms that support specific forms of tourism, such as marine tourism, wellness tourism, mountain tourism, agrotourism and gastronomic tourism.
