As CEO and Publisher of Hellenic News of America, I had the extraordinary honor of attending a reception at the White House in recognition of Greek Independence Day on Monday, March 24th. Standing in such a historic setting, surrounded by fellow Greek Americans and leaders, was profoundly moving. To have the President of the United States honor the strength and resilience of the Greek people was a powerful reminder of how far we’ve come as a people and as a community.

Greek Independence Day is more than a historical milestone; it is a defining chapter in the story of human resilience. The Greek people endured nearly 400 years of Ottoman rule, yet they never surrendered their faith or identity. The revolution of 1821 was not just a fight for freedom; it was a fight to protect the very ideals that Greece gave to the world, democracy, justice, and the unwavering belief in human dignity.

To see that struggle honored at the highest level of American government was a profound moment of pride. It underscored the deep and historic bond between Greece and the United States, a relationship built on shared values and mutual respect. The Greek-American story is one of sacrifice and triumph. Our parents and grandparents came to this country with little more than faith and determination, working tirelessly to build new lives while preserving the traditions and values that define us.

Yesterday’s celebration was not just about remembering the past; it was about recognizing the strength and influence of the Greek-American community today. Our community has become a force for good in America, excelling in business, politics, education, and the arts while remaining deeply connected to our heritage. Our presence at the White House is proof that the Greek-American story is not one of survival; it is one of thriving.

As I stood there, I thought about the sacrifices of those who came before us, the courage it took to rise up, the faith it took to endure, and the pride that remains unshakable to this day. Our ancestors fought for freedom, and now it is up to us to carry their legacy forward. We honor their sacrifice not only by remembering their struggle but by living with the same strength, faith, and determination.
The Greek spirit is alive and thriving, and as long as we remain united in our heritage and values, it will remain strong for generations to come.
