Philadelphia, PA – April 6, 2025 – The 2025 Philadelphia Greek Independence Day Parade was a monumental celebration of Greek culture, heritage, and community. This year, Drake and Maria Behrakis were honored as Grand Marshals, celebrated for their exceptional contributions to Greek-American organizations, the Greek Orthodox Church, and their unwavering commitment to preserving Greek traditions.

Drake Behrakis, a well-regarded philanthropist and advocate, has been instrumental in advancing several initiatives that support Greek heritage, faith, and education. His involvement with organizations such as the National Hellenic Society, Hellenic College Holy Cross, and the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America has made him a key figure in strengthening the Greek-American community nationwide. The weekend began with a gala on Saturday night, where Kalomira, the renowned Greek-American singer, captivated the audience with a stunning performance. The evening’s events were expertly guided by Katie Katro, reporter for 6ABC News in Philadelphia, who served as the Mistress of Ceremonies. During the gala, Caterina Papoulias-Sakellaris was honored with the prestigious Eleftheria Medal, recognizing her lifetime of dedication to preserving Greek culture and promoting the Greek Orthodox faith.

Drake and Maria Behrakis’ role as Grand Marshals was central to the weekend’s events. In their heartfelt speeches, they expressed their deep connection to their Greek heritage and pride in the Greek-American community. Drake spoke about the unifying threads of culture and faith, saying, “Through every challenge and blessing, there’s one powerful thread that continues to bring us together: our love of our culture and our love of our faith.” He also honored their parents, acknowledging how their values continue to guide them.
Maria reflected on her personal connection to Philadelphia, sharing, “Philadelphia is where I was born. And I don’t know if I can say this without tearing up, but this city was my parents’ first home in America.” Returning to the city and marching in the parade felt like a meaningful full-circle moment for the Behrakis family.

The weekend’s events also saw the participation of several distinguished honorary officials, including His Eminence Metropolitan Apostolos of New Jersey, the Greek Presidential Guard, Lt. Col. Konstantinos Bousis, Ambassador of Greece in the USA Ekaterini Nassika, Pennsylvania State Senator Maria Collett, Consul General of Cyprus Michael Firillas, Consul General of Greece in New York Iphigenia Kanara, and Deputy Minister for Greeks Abroad Giannis Loverdos. Their presence underscored the importance of the event in fostering strong ties between Greece, Cyprus, and the Greek-American community.
