Memories of Greece: the Agricultural Fields of Thessaly
By Catherine Tsounis
On the road to the Meteora Monastery, we passed through the fertile fields of Thessaly—a once-thriving agricultural region before the devastation of Storm Daniel in 2023. I was fortunate to see this rich landscape just six weeks before the storm struck. By 2025, farm production had begun to recover, but it had not returned to its former state as it was in August 2023.
I never knew that Thessaly, is the “Breadbasket of Greece”. As we drove through, we saw vast stretches of farmland. Thessaly has long been one of Greece’s most important agricultural regions, cultivating crops such as corn, rice, tobacco, olives, vegetables, and citrus fruits. Thessaly has lowlands surrounded by mountains.
Lake Karla lies within the Thessalian plain, situated at the northern end of the Magnesia regional unit in the Pineios basin. Thessaly accounts for a quarter of Greece’s farmland, much of which was wiped out in the September 2023 floods. 1
