Ottawa, Ontario, Canada — The Hellenic Republic and the Embassy of Greece in Canada have appointed Sotirios Kotoulas as Honorary Consul of Greece for the Province of Manitoba, Canada.
In this capacity, Mr. Kotoulas will represent and advance the interests of the Hellenic Republic in Manitoba while supporting and strengthening diplomatic, cultural, educational, and economic relations between Greece, Manitoba, and Canada. The Honorary Consulate will serve the Greek diaspora community in Manitoba and foster increased engagement between institutions, organizations, and citizens of both countries.
The establishment of the Honorary Consulate reflects the enduring relationship between Greece and Canada and underscores a shared commitment to international cooperation, cultural exchange, innovation, education, trade, energy, shipping, and public dialogue.
Mr. Kotoulas is the founder of Sotirios Corp, an architecture and design studio with projects throughout North America, and Europe. He received his professional degree in architecture from The Cooper Union in New York City and completed his Master of Architecture degree at McGill University in Montreal, in history and theory of architecture under Alberto Pérez-Gómez. His book, Space Out, published by Springer-Verlag and edited by Lebbeus Woods, explores the spatial and material dimensions of invisible and immeasurable electromagnetic phenomena.
Recent projects include Sherbrook Flats, a structural masonry mixed-use apartment building in downtown Winnipeg; a residence for artist Katherine Bernhardt in Old San Juan; and exhibition and bookstore designs for the DESTE Foundation in Athens, including the GenX exhibition opening in June 2026. He has exhibited his work at Melas Martinou gallery in Athens, Greece.
Mr. Kotoulas has designed artist studios and cultural spaces throughout North America and, through Alpha Masonry, has led major heritage restoration projects in Canada and the United States, including the award-winning Sun Tower restoration in downtown Vancouver, the Judd Foundation Architecture Office Building in Marfa, Texas, and the ongoing restoration of the Manitoba Legislative Building.
Sotirios Kotoulas also collaborated with the late Elder and Knowledge Keeper Dr. Dave Courchene, Nii Gaani Aki Innini (Leading Earth Man) of the Anishinaabe Nation, on an architectural space for ceremony, ritual, and education at an ancient sacred site in Manitoba.
Sotirios Kotoulas exhibited a new body of work titled Star Stories in the exhibition Conceiving the Plan: Nuance and Intimacy in the Construction of Civic
Space at the 2021 Venice Biennale of Architecture, Italian Pavilion, curated by Yael Hameiri Sainsaux and Alessandro Melis; the exhibition continues to tour internationally, accompanied by a catalogue published worldwide by Skira.
More recently, Sotirios Kotoulas and artist Jamie Diamond collaborated on a conceptual Chase Manhattan Bank branch for Albuquerque, presented in 2024 in the Monte di Pietà exhibition at the Prada Foundation in Venice.
Sotirios Kotoulas has extensive experience in cultural diplomacy and governance, having served as Board President of Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art and Basilica Hudson, and as a board member of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. He is currently Board Chair of Anthology Film Archives and serves on the board of the International Peace Garden. Mr. Kotoulas has taught at the University of Manitoba, University of Puerto Rico, Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico, and currently teaches architecture at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and was the Artist-in-Residence at Dartmouth College, ssNew Hampshire, in 2023.
