The American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (“AHEPA”) announced it’s 2025 AHEPA Hellenic Athletic Hall of Fame selectees. AHEPA is the nation’s largest and longest-tenured Greek-American Hellenic organization, demonstrating philanthropy, community service and the perpetuation of Hellenic ideals.
The AHEPA Hellenic Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 1974 and is the second oldest ethnic Hatl of Fame, and now includes near 200 inductees, including athletes and leaders in the sport’s industry such as Harry Agganis, Alex Karras, Pete Sampras, Eric Karros, Steve Lappas, Bob Costas, Greg Louganis and Ted Leonsis.
The 2025 Class of the AHEPA Hellenic Athletic Hall of Fame includes:
Mike Moustakas was a star third (3″) baseman in Major League Baseball over a thirteen (13) year professional career. He was a three (3) time All-Star (2015, 2017, 2019); the American League’s Comeback Player of the Year in 2017, and a Member of the World’s Series Champions Kansas City Royals in 2015. While he also played for the Milwaukee Brewers, Cincinnati Reds, California Rockies and Los Angeles Angels, his greatest prominence was with the Royals, hitting 28 home runs and 82 RB!’s in 2015 and 38 home runs, a Royal’s season record, in 2017; Mike was also the AHEPA Agganis Awardee in 2016, as the Most Outstanding Professional Athlete;
Jimmy Patsos is a National Basketball Commentator and successful college basketball coach. After a standout four (4) year playing career at Catholic University, he had a twenty-seven (27) year career as a college basketball coach. He was an Associate Head Coach for the University of Maryland which was National Champions in 2002. Jim then embarked on a fourteen (14) year tenure as Head Coach at the Division 1 level, amassing a total of 222 wins, at Loyola (Maryland) College, where he took Loyola to the NCAA Tournament in 2012 and at Siena (NY) College which won the CBl Post-Season Tournament in 2014. Jim currently is a consultant for Under Armour Basketball and is a Broadcastfore rth e Washington Wizards, Washington Mystics and both George Washington University and Towson State College;
Peter Soteropoulos had an outstanding college baseball career at the University of Connecticut followed by a Major League Baseball Minor League Baseball stint. At UCONN, Peter was a starter as both a pitcher and a position player, with a career batting average of .371 (third in school history), including 199 hits and 128 RBI’s; as a pitcher, he compiled a 13-9 career record; he was a two-year Captain and earned All-Big East Conference honors for each of his four seasons playing for the Huskies. Peter was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2003 Major League draft and played two seasons in the Minor Leagues;
Nicholas Theodorou was a collegiate baseball star at the University of California Los Angeles from 1994-1998, with a career batting average of .339, and leaving UCLA as it’s all-time leader in on-base percentage (.451) and career post-season batting average (.523); he is fourth (4™) in UCLA history in post-season hits and led UCLA to the College World Series in 1997; Nick was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers and played eight (8) professional seasons in the Minor Leagues, including a Pacific Coast League All-Star selection {Triple A) in 2004. Nick was also the selectee of the AHEPA William G. Chirgotis Collegiate Athlete of the Year Award in 1997; and Clint Zavaras was a member of the Seattle Mariners as a baseball pitcher, after being drafted in the 1985 Major League Baseball Draft in the third (3″) round. He played ten (10) years in the Minor Leagues with the Mariner’s and the Colorado Rockies organizations at the Triple A Level
Notably, Peter Soteropoulos, Nick Theodorou and Clint Zavaras were all teammates and starters for the Hellas (Greece) National Baseball Tearm that competed in the 2020 Athens Olympics.
AHEPA Supreme President Savas Tsivicos lauded this outstanding Hall of Fame Class of athletes and a coach who had reached the heights of their respective sports.
Tsivicos indicated: “the Order of AHEPA honors brilliance and excellence in all fields, and in this case, athletics. These Hellenic Athletes and Sport’s contributors reached the very pinnacle of success across their respective fields, and we are honored that they are joining the pantheon of outstanding Hellenic athletes and sports luminaries over this hatf-century of recognition”.
Tsivicos also noted “l tip my cap to AHEPA’s Athletic Department, led by Supreme Athletic Director Chris Atsaves and Gregory ). Stamos, who Chairs the Hellenic Hall of Fame Selection Committee, for its’ dedication in honoring the careers of these exceptional Hellenic athletes, coaches and contributors to the sport’s industry”.
The selectees will be inducted at AHEPA’s 103™ Annual National Convention in Orlando, Florida, at the Athletic Luncheon on Wednesday, July 23, 2025.
