Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew Inspires Faithful at St. Nicholas National Shrine: A Day of Triumph, Renewal, and Global Connection
New York, NY – The St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine at the World Trade Center became the beating heart of global Orthodoxy as His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew returned for a historic visit. This deeply significant moment brought together hierarchs, clergy, dignitaries, and faithful in a moving doxology that celebrated faith’s triumph over tragedy and the Shrine’s mission as a beacon of hope for generations to come.
A Joyful Welcome by Rev. Protopresbyter Andreas Vithoulkas
Reverend Protopresbyter of the Ecumenical Throne Andreas Vithoulkas, Archiepiscopal Vicar of the Shrine, opened the service with an outpouring of “exceeding joy and gladness,” welcoming the Ecumenical Patriarch “home” to St. Nicholas.
He recalled His All-Holiness’ historic 2021 visit, when the Patriarch performed the Theranixia (Opening of the Doors) and inaugurated the Shrine’s liturgical life on the 30th anniversary of his enthronement. On that same day, the Patriarch bestowed the Shrine’s most sacred treasure, the miracle-working relic of St. Nicholas’ holy hand from Mount Athos, a gift that has transformed the Shrine into a place of pilgrimage and healing.
Archbishop Elpidophoros: The Shrine’s Mission Is Eternal
Archbishop Elpidophoros of America delivered a heartfelt address, emphasizing that the Shrine now stands complete with its iconography, yet its mission will never end:
“As a house of memory and prayer, the Shrine will always bear witness to the fallen of that terrible day and provide comfort and healing to all who come to this holy ground.”
The Archbishop’s words underscored that this is more than a building, it is a living witness of faith and resilience at Ground Zero, a sacred space where hope overcomes despair.
Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew: A Global Message of Unity and Faith
When His All-Holiness spoke, the atmosphere was electric. Offering his remarks in Greek and English, he expressed deep gratitude to Almighty God and to the faithful whose love and sacrifices brought the Shrine to completion.
He praised Fr. Loukas Xenofontinos for his tireless daily labor and prayer, and Fr. Alexandros Karloutsos for spearheading the fundraising efforts that transformed a long-awaited dream into reality. “This is a historical work,” he proclaimed, “in a place once struck by human evil, now transformed into a witness of God’s glory.”
In a powerful symbolic act, His All-Holiness revealed that he had brought soil from his birthplace of Imbros to plant a myrtle tree in St. Phoebe’s Garden. This gesture, he explained, affirms the unbreakable spiritual bond between the Mother Church of Constantinople and the faithful of America, extending from the Bosphorus to the Hudson.
“We are citizens of one ecumene, of one inhabited Earth,” the Patriarch declared, calling for mutual respect, peace, and understanding among all people of faith.
Sacred Gifts Presented in His Honor
A highlight of the service was the presentation of two extraordinary gifts, donated by Archon Peter Palivos and his wife Vicky Palivos:
-
A Reliquary Case – to permanently safeguard the sacred relics of St. Nicholas for future generations.
-
Hierarchical Vestments – described as “theology in fabric,” proclaiming the glory of Christ’s resurrection and the hope of immortality.
His All-Holiness personally thanked the Palivos family for their devotion, generosity, and love for the Church, recognizing their offering as a witness to resurrection, renewal, and the living faith of the Orthodox community.
A Defining Moment for the Shrine and the Greek Orthodox Faithful
This visit was far more than ceremonial, it was a powerful reaffirmation of the Shrine’s mission as a global symbol of faith, hope, and resilience. For the thousands who gathered, it was a moment of spiritual renewal, a call to carry the cross with joy, and an invitation to embrace the freedom we have in Christ.
As His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew stood before the faithful, blessing this hallowed ground once more, the message was clear: faith is alive at Ground Zero, and its light will never be extinguished.
