From Thiva to Athens: A Dream Takes Shape
Dimitris was born and raised in Thiva, where he first discovered his passion for barbering while helping his aunt in the family hair salon. As a boy, he spent hours sweeping floors, watching, and learning, dreaming that one day he would open a barbershop of his own.
Like many young Greeks, Dimitris eventually moved to Athens in search of opportunity. Life was not easy. By night, he worked as a bartender; by day, he apprenticed as a barber, working tirelessly to earn his professional certificate. But the biggest challenge remained: finding the capital to launch his dream.
Microloans: Turning Dreams Into Reality
Traditional banks were not an option. Despite his skills and determination, Dimitris was denied a loan to start his business. That’s when THI, in partnership with AFI (Action Finance Initiative), stepped in.
Through AFI’s microloan program, Dimitris was finally able to secure the funds he needed to open his barbershop. Today, his shop in downtown Athens is buzzing, not only with clippers, but with laughter, conversation, and the pride of a young man who turned his dream into reality.
The Bigger Picture: Impact Across Greece
Dimitris is just one of hundreds of success stories made possible through THI’s collaboration with AFI. To date, AFI has distributed more than 1,000 microloans, supporting the launch of over 600 small businesses throughout Greece. These businesses are revitalizing local economies, creating jobs, and offering hope for a new generation determined to stay and rebuild their country.
