WASHINGTON, D.C. — November 16, 2025 — The Daughters of Penelope (DOP), the international women’s organization founded in 1929 to promote Hellenism, philanthropy, education, and civic responsibility, proudly celebrates its 96th Anniversary this November 16.
In a special message marking this milestone, Grand President Antoinette Marousis-Zachariades reflected on the organization’s extraordinary journey, nearly a century of women shaping history, serving communities, and advancing the ideals of their founders.
“It is difficult to sum up 96 years in one article,” said Marousis-Zachariades. “Our members have lived through every major chapter of modern history, from the Great Depression and World War II to the Civil Rights Movement and the age of technology, yet our values have remained constant: loyalty, philanthropy, civic duty, education, and the preservation of Hellenism.”
Founded by Alexandra Apostolides and the charter members of EOS Chapter #1, the Daughters of Penelope emerged as a pioneering auxiliary to AHEPA, empowering Greek-American women to lead beyond the walls of their homes and churches. Inspired by the virtue and resilience of the mythological Penelope, Apostolides envisioned an organization grounded in both American ideals and the wisdom of ancient Greece.
Today, that vision has grown into an international sisterhood of women of all backgrounds, united in service and leadership. The Daughters of Penelope support a wide array of philanthropic causes, including advocacy against domestic violence, cancer research, Alzheimer’s awareness, Meals on Wheels, and AHEPA Senior Living.
As part of this year’s commemoration, the DOP pays tribute to two remarkable groups of members:
- “Life Waived Members” — women who achieved 50 continuous years of service by 1999 and now hold honorary lifetime status. Among them is Sister Ida Stathakis of District 5, who will celebrate her 102nd birthday on January 31, 2026, marking 77 years of continuous service.
- “Seventy-Plus Years of Service Members” — sisters aged 85 to 102 who have each devoted between 70 and 78 years of commitment to the Order.
“The lasting impact of these sisters’ contributions, resilience, and wisdom has sustained our organization,” noted Marousis-Zachariades. “They are our mentors, and their example continues to inspire future generations of Daughters to serve with strength, grace, and purpose.”
Looking ahead to the 100th Anniversary in 2029, Marousis-Zachariades urged members to continue cultivating leadership, mentorship, and engagement among new generations.
“As we move toward our centennial, we must continue to inspire women to BEElieve and BEEcome,” she said. “Our mission endures, to empower women, honor our heritage, and serve our communities with compassion and dedication.”
