The year 2026 marks a significant milestone for Hellenism and the Greek Diaspora, as we commemorate two major historical anniversaries: 205 years since the Greek Revolution of 1821 and 250 years since the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America.
On the occasion of these anniversaries, a unique multimedia, research-based, and live music event was held, combining historical analysis, narration, audiovisual material, and live performances to create an immersive experience for the audience.
As part of the event, the results of a student competition were presented, which had been organized as a separate initiative focusing on the connection between the two revolutions and the enduring significance of their ideals. Students were invited:
- To demonstrate how these two revolutions express shared values such as freedom, independence, and national identity.
- To analyze how, as Greek-American students, these anniversaries help them understand the meaning of freedom and cultural heritage in today’s world.
Guest Speakers:
The academic and historical framework of the event was guided by Dr. Konstantinos Chatzidimitriou and Dr. Evangelos Athanasopoulos, who offered insightful presentations on the historical dimensions of both revolutions, effectively linking past and present.
Musical Program:
The event featured live musical narration under the direction of Grigoris Maninakis, with performances by vocalists Angeliki Psouni and Nikita Tabakis, and musicians Glafkos Kontemeniotis, Kostas Psarros, Lefteris Bounias, and Erikos Vlesmas. The musical component played a key role in creating a moving and engaging atmosphere.
Competition Results:
- 1st Prize: Saint Demetrios Greek – American School, Astoria – Alexia Theodoropoulou
- 2nd Prize: Holy Cross School, Brooklyn – Nikoleta Kakava (Sponsors: Dimitrios and Georgia Kaloidis Parochial school)
- 3rd Prize: Saint Demetrios Greek – American School, Astoria – Stella Galani
In addition, a special recognition was awarded to Saint Demetrios School. The honor was received by Principal Eleni Karagiorgos and the President of the Parents and Guardians Association, Nikos Papaioannou. The award was presented by the Parade President, Lou Katsos.
Co-organizers of the event were Nomiki Kastana and Dimitris Filios, on behalf of the Greek Parade Committee.
The event highlighted the enduring connection between Greek and American history, reaffirming that the values of freedom, democracy, and cultural identity remain timeless and relevant.
