New York City’s Greek Independence Day Parade Unites Thousands in Celebration of Hellenic Pride and Heritage
New York, NY — On Sunday, April 26, 2026, Fifth Avenue was transformed into a sea of blue and white as thousands of Greek Americans, Philhellenes, dignitaries, organizations, students, clergy, and community leaders gathered for the annual Greek Independence Day Parade in New York City — the largest Greek Independence Day parade outside of Greece.
Organized by the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York, this year’s Parade served as a vibrant celebration of Hellenic heritage, faith, freedom, and the enduring contributions of the Greek-American community to the cultural fabric of the United States.
The 2026 Parade carried special significance as it commemorated the 205th anniversary of the Greek War of Independence alongside the upcoming 250th anniversary of American Independence. The theme highlighted the shared revolutionary ideals of Greece and the United States — liberty, democracy, self-determination, and civic virtue — values that continue to unite both nations centuries later.
From the historic opening moments on Fifth Avenue to the spirited participation of Greek schools, cultural societies, churches, evzones, musicians, and organizations from across the Tri-State area and beyond, the Parade reflected the unity and vitality of Hellenism in America. Families lined the streets waving Greek and American flags, while chants of pride and celebration echoed throughout Manhattan.
Parade Chairman Lou Katsos emphasized the broader significance of this year’s celebration and the importance of strengthening unity throughout the Greek-American community.
“Together, through cooperation, vision, and shared purpose, we are building not only a parade, but a commemorative year that our entire Hellenic community can take pride in,” said Katsos. “This year represents an opportunity to honor our shared history while inspiring future generations to carry forward the values and ideals that define Hellenism.”
The Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York proudly honored this year’s distinguished Grand Marshals, whose leadership and commitment to Hellenism have made a lasting impact both within the Greek-American community and internationally.
Among the honored Grand Marshals were businessman and philanthropist John A. Catsimatidis, Chairman of the Red Apple Group, recognized for his longstanding support of Greek-American, philanthropic, and Orthodox initiatives, and Nicholas Tsakos, Founder and CEO of Tsakos Energy Navigation (TEN) Ltd., whose global leadership in maritime enterprise and dedication to Greek heritage continue to inspire generations.
The Parade also recognized two organizations whose work has strengthened ties between Greece, Cyprus, and the Diaspora. The Hellenic Initiative (THI) was honored for its transformative philanthropic efforts supporting Greece through entrepreneurship, education, and sustainable development, while Capital Link, under the leadership of Nicholas and Olga Bornozis, was recognized for decades of promoting Greek shipping, investment, and economic leadership on the international stage.
This year’s celebration once again demonstrated the strength, resilience, and continuity of the Greek-American community. Beyond the pageantry and festivities, the Parade served as a reminder of the sacrifices made by previous generations and the responsibility of preserving Hellenic values, language, faith, and culture for future generations.
As New York City once again embraced the spirit of Greece, the 2026 Greek Independence Day Parade stood not only as a celebration of history, but as a powerful expression of unity, identity, and pride for Hellenes across America and around the world.
