“Respect for international law and the denunciation of all forms of revisionism are becoming more urgent than ever in order to resolve disputes peacefully and reduce tensions in the wider region,” Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias said in an interview with CNN Greece on Friday.
Mapping the new situation that has arisen after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Dendias noted that a completely different geopolitical environment with increasing risks and challenges at an international level has been created and expressed Greece’s desire to contribute constructively to tackling new challenges and consolidating its position as a factor of stability and cooperation, having international law as the spearhead of its foreign policy.
“We promote these principles in all our contacts with Turkish officials. On the other hand, we do not have illusions,” he said when asked about Turkish policy towards Greece after Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul. “We know that Turkish policy remains a challenge, not only for Greece, but also for the European Union,” he told CNN Greece.
In this context, he stated that it is entirely up to the Turkish side to ensure that the generally positive atmosphere during the meeting between Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Erdogan continues and is confirmed in practice by subsequent developments.
