“We are working hard and we are optimistic that Greece will play a leading role in tourism in the summer of 2022,” Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias said on Sunday in an interview with Real News.
He underlined that this has been achieved with methodical effort that includes, among other things, organized campaigns with the Greek National Tourist Organisation (GNTO), synergies with major “market players”, use of modern international trends such as digital nomads.
Kikilias cited as an example TUI, the largest tour operator in the country, which “has stated that it will double its visitors to Greece, from 1.5 million to 3 million, possibly surpassing even in 2019. We get the same picture from the airlines, the hotels, the cruise sector,” he stated, pointing out the direct contribution of tourism in the increase of the national income, in the creation of jobs and in the support of the development, especially in times of crisis.
“This is the ‘dividend’ that tourism returns to society and the market, to small and medium-sized traders, to restaurant owners, to all those who feed and are fed by the locomotive of the Greek economy”, he stated.
