(NEW YORK, NY) – Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) today announced the Parade Committee of the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York has named her a Grand Marshal for New York’s Greek Independence Day Parade this Sunday, June 5, on Fifth Avenue. A contingent of Greece’s Presidential Guard Corps, the Evzones, will also march in the parade and participate in other parade events to uplift the spirits of the Greek-American community.
“As the daughter of a Greek immigrant, it’s an honor to be named a Grand Marshal for New York’s Greek Independence Day Parade where thousands of Greek-Americans will gather to celebrate our rich culture and community,” Malliotakis said. “At a time when Greece is facing aggressors in the Eastern Mediterranean, it’s important for the Hellenic Members of Congress to show support for our ally, strengthen our bilateral relationship, and celebrate the many contributions Greeks have made to our country.”
Other Grand Marshals include His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, members of the Congressional Hellenic Caucus, Reps. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) and Gus Bilirakis (R-FL), and Greek Olympic gold medalist Fani Chalkia.
Last month, Malliotakis met with Prime Minister of the Hellenic Republic, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, following his address to a Joint Session of Congress. During the meetings, the lawmakers discussed several issues important to U.S.-Greece relations, including energy independence, military cooperation, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and Turkish aggression.
Malliotakis is a member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs where she serves as the Ranking Member for the Subcommittee on International Development, International Organizations, and Global Corporate Social Impact, and sits on the Subcommittee on Europe, Energy, the Environment, and Cyber.
