“Shadows are not allowed in our democracy,” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Monday in his statement on the recent developments and referred to a series of institutional changes to the National Intelligence Service (EYP) which the government will propose starting with the strengthening of the accountability and the supervision by the parliament while he agreed with the setting up of an examination committee which will operate on conditions dictated by the nature of the issue.

“Apart from the fact that everything was lawful, the National Intelligence Service underestimated the political dimension of the specific action. It should not have happened as it provoked cracks to the citizens’ trust in the national security services,” Mitsotakis said.
“What happened was wrong, I was not aware of it and if I was I would not have allowed it,” he underlined.

He said that the handling of the case was insufficient and that’s why the head of EYP and the general secretary of the Prime Minister’s office, who assumed the objective political responsibility, were removed immediately.

Finally, Mitsotakis said he was open to any creative idea that will integrate the best practices from abroad and that he will upgrade the accountability mechanisms of such a crucial service for the country’s security.
