Vardis Vardinogiannis, chairman of the Vardinogiannis Group, has died at the age of 91.
According to the statement issued by his family:
“With deep sadness, the Vardis Vardinogiannis family announces that the beloved father and grandfather, Vardis I. Vardinogiannis, passed away today, Tuesday, November 12, 2024.”
He was the chairman and controlling shareholder of Motor Oil Hellas while he was involved in numerous other shipping and business activities.
Biography
According to the Marianna V. Vardinoyannis Foundation, Vardis Vardinoyannis was born in Episkopi, near Rethymnon on Crete in 1933, one of five children. He graduated from the Hellenic Naval Academy and served as Hellenic Navy officer until he was forcefully discharged by the junta and exiled on Amorgos island. He was later honored by the state with the title of honorary admiral.
After his brother Nikos’ sudden death in 1972, he took over the helm of Motor Oil Hellas, which he held for 52 years. He also expanded with business interests in Greece and abroad, in the oil, shipping, banking, hotel, and mass media sectors but retained his headquarters in Greece.
He was married to Marianna Vardinoyannis, who died in 2023, and they had five children: Yiannis, Christianna, Giorgos, Nikos, and Vardianna.
