A Letter from the Publisher
There are moments in history that transcend dates on a calendar. They become milestones that remind us not only of where we have been, but of who we are and who we aspire to become.
This year, we are blessed to celebrate two such milestones: the 250th Anniversary of the United States of America and the 205th Anniversary of the Greek Revolution of 1821. Though separated by forty-five years and an ocean, these anniversaries are forever united by a common pursuit, the enduring quest for liberty, democracy, and the fundamental right of people to determine their own destiny.
As Publisher of the Hellenic News of America, this commemorative edition holds profound meaning. It is more than a celebration of history; it is a tribute to the ideals that have shaped civilizations, inspired revolutions, and continue to guide free societies around the world.
It is also fitting that this special edition is published from Philadelphia, the birthplace of American independence. It was here, 250 years ago, that visionary leaders gathered to declare that liberty was not a privilege granted by governments, but a God-given right belonging to every individual. Yet those revolutionary ideas did not emerge in isolation. America’s founders looked to ancient Greece, to the birthplace of democracy, for inspiration. They studied the writings of Plato and Aristotle, admired the civic ideals of Athens, and embraced the belief that government should exist by and for the people.
Nearly half a century later, those same ideals found new life when Greece rose to reclaim its own freedom. After centuries of Ottoman rule, the Greek people answered history’s call with extraordinary courage, unwavering faith, and an unbreakable determination to restore their nation. Their struggle was not only for independence, but for the preservation of a civilization whose ideas had forever changed the world.
History remembers these great events, but history is ultimately written by people.
As we commemorate these anniversaries, we pause to honor the heroes whose sacrifices made them possible. We remember the American patriots who pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor in pursuit of independence. We honor the brave men and women of the Greek Revolution who refused to surrender their identity, their faith, and their hope. We remember every soldier, every patriot, every family, and every citizen who chose courage over fear and freedom over oppression.
Without their strength, conviction, and unwavering love of country, we would not be who we are today. The liberties we cherish, the opportunities we pursue, and the democratic societies we proudly call home exist because generations before us were willing to sacrifice everything for something greater than themselves. Freedom has never been free. It has always been earned through courage, protected through sacrifice, and preserved through the vigilance of those entrusted with its care.
For Greek Americans, these anniversaries carry special significance. We are heirs to two extraordinary legacies. One gave the world the principles of democracy, philosophy, and reason. The other transformed those ideals into one of history’s greatest democratic republics. Ours is not a story of divided allegiance, but of shared values. It is the story of two nations forever connected by their belief in liberty, justice, human dignity, and the enduring power of hope.
For nearly four decades, the Hellenic News of America has been privileged to chronicle that story. We have celebrated our heritage, shared the accomplishments of our community, and preserved the voices of generations whose faith, hard work, entrepreneurship, philanthropy, and philotimo have enriched both Greece and America. That mission remains as important today as it was when this newspaper first began.
As we celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary and reflect upon Greece’s 205 years of independence, we are reminded that democracy is not self-sustaining. Freedom is not guaranteed. Every generation inherits the responsibility to protect the institutions, principles, and values that those before us fought so courageously to secure.
May we never take these blessings for granted.
May we honor the sacrifices of those who came before us not only through remembrance, but through the way we live our lives—with integrity, compassion, courage, and a steadfast commitment to the common good.
The torch of liberty has now been passed to us.
May we carry it with wisdom.
May we protect it with courage.
And may we leave it burning even brighter for generations yet to come.
On behalf of the Hellenic News of America, thank you to our readers, supporters, advertisers, community leaders, and friends who continue to believe in our mission. Together, let us celebrate the remarkable journey of two great nations whose shared ideals continue to illuminate the world.
Happy 250th Anniversary, America.
Happy 205th Anniversary, Greece.
May God bless these two great nations, and may the enduring light of liberty continue to guide us all.
