Philadelphia, PA – A city rich in history and home to a thriving Greek-American community served as the backdrop for a momentous gathering organized by the Federation of Hellenic-American Societies of Philadelphia to honor the historic visit of Greece’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Honorable Georgios Kotsiras. The luncheon brought together distinguished guests, community leaders, and representatives of the Greek diaspora to celebrate the enduring bonds between Greece and its diaspora.
The event opened with welcoming remarks and introductions by John Vasiliou, who plays an active role in the Federation as Vice President and Chairman of Philadelphia’s Greek Parade. Vasiliou emphasized the significance of the gathering, designed to foster meaningful dialogue among leaders of the Greek-American community. He highlighted the vibrant Greek presence in Philadelphia, praised the strong ties between Greece and the diaspora, and recognized the contributions of key dignitaries, including Consul General Ifigenia Kanara, Consul General Michalis Firillas, and His Eminence Metropolitan Apostolos of New Jersey.
Following Vasiliou, Judge Harry Karapalides, President of the Federation, provided a historical perspective on the Greek-American community in Philadelphia. He traced its roots back to the late 1800s and emphasized the Federation’s role as a unifying voice for Greek-Americans since its founding in 1949. Karapalides praised the community for its dedication to preserving Greek heritage, faith, and culture while advocating for causes such as aid for Cyprus and the rebuilding of St. Nicholas Shrine.
Consul General Kanara’s Vision for the Diaspora
Consul General Ifigenia Kanara addressed the audience next, emphasizing the Greek government’s ongoing commitment to the diaspora and its pivotal role in preserving Hellenism worldwide. She outlined two primary goals for her tenure:
- Improving Consular Services: Kanara highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance the efficiency and accessibility of consular services, including reducing barriers, increasing appointment availability, and extending service hours. She proudly shared that appointment availability had already increased by 80%, signaling significant progress in meeting the needs of the diaspora. She also expressed a commitment to ongoing improvements, such as digitizing processes to reduce bureaucracy.
- Engaging the Greek-American Community: Kanara underscored the importance of fostering connections between Greece and the diaspora through initiatives in culture, commerce, education, and family engagement. She announced plans to collaborate with community organizations to expand educational programs, cultural exchanges, and business opportunities that bridge Greece and its diaspora.
Kanara expressed her admiration for the vibrant Greek-American community in Philadelphia, describing it as a cornerstone of Hellenism in the United States. She emphasized that the Greek government recognizes the importance of the diaspora and is actively investing in programs and partnerships to strengthen ties. She concluded her speech by encouraging open dialogue and feedback to better serve the needs of the Greek-American community.
Michalis Firillas’s Call for Unity
Michalis Firillas, the Consul General of Cyprus in New York, delivered a poignant speech acknowledging the steadfast support of the Greek-American community in Philadelphia for Cyprus over the past five decades. He expressed gratitude for their solidarity, particularly in the face of the ongoing Turkish occupation, and highlighted the community’s dedication despite limited resources and a competitive environment.
Firillas emphasized the continued importance of the Cyprus issue, noting that the struggle for justice remains far from over. He highlighted the shared challenges faced by Greece and Cyprus in the Eastern Mediterranean, including the aggression of a neighboring state, and praised the collaboration between the two nations in strengthening ties with the United States to promote stability in the region.
Firillas concluded by thanking the community for their enduring commitment and encouraged them to persist in their efforts. “Your dedication is a testament to the unity and resilience of Hellenism,” he said.
Deputy Minister Kotsiras Shares Strategic Plan for the Diaspora
The centerpiece of the event was the address by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Georgios Kotsiras, who highlighted the symbolic and significant nature of his visit. “This visit highlights the enduring bonds between Greece and its diaspora while reinforcing the Greek government’s dedication to preserving our heritage and supporting Hellenic communities abroad,” he said.
The Minister presented the newly unveiled Strategic Plan for the Hellenism of the Diaspora (2024-2027), which focuses on four key pillars:
- Preserving Greek Language and Culture: The Minister highlighted the importance of language and cultural programs as the foundation of Hellenic identity. He announced plans to expand Greek language courses worldwide, support bilingual education, and enhance cultural initiatives abroad.
- Strengthening Greek Orthodox Churches: He emphasized the pivotal role of churches in uniting and sustaining Hellenism worldwide. He reiterated the Greek government’s support for the Church as a cornerstone of faith, tradition, and community.
- Enhancing Services for Greeks Abroad: Building on Kanara’s remarks, Minister Kotsiras announced additional measures to simplify consular services, including digitization, mobile consulates, and a user-friendly online portal to serve Greeks abroad.
- Engaging the Next Generation: The Minister underscored the importance of youth engagement, announcing programs to bring young Greek-Americans to Greece for cultural immersion and educational exchanges. These initiatives aim to deepen their emotional and cultural connection to their heritage.
Reflecting on the broader challenges facing Greece and the diaspora, the Minister also marked the 50th anniversary of the illegal occupation of Cyprus. He reiterated Greece’s unwavering unity with Cyprus in pursuing justice, grounded in international law and Security Council resolutions. “Hellenism is indivisible,” he stated, “and together, we face challenges with unity and strength.”
Minister Kotsiras also addressed the growing geopolitical challenges in the Eastern Mediterranean, emphasizing the critical role of Greece’s partnership with the United States and the diaspora in promoting regional stability. He praised the Greek-American community for amplifying these efforts and pledged to continue working closely with the diaspora to address shared challenges.
Concluding Remarks by His Eminence Metropolitan Apostolos of New Jersey
The program concluded with a stirring address by His Eminence Metropolitan Apostolos of New Jersey, who welcomed the audience on behalf of the 400,000 Greeks living in the five states under his Metropolis. Metropolitan Apostolos celebrated the Greek community in Philadelphia, comprised of 14 vibrant Greek Orthodox parishes, for its efforts to preserve language, traditions, and heritage. Reflecting on the history of Greek immigrants in the United States, Metropolitan Apostolos praised their success in various fields while maintaining a strong commitment to faith, education, and cultural values. He emphasized the pivotal role of churches and schools in sustaining Greek identity and underscored the importance of unity among Greeks worldwide.
Metropolitan Apostolos concluded by celebrating Philadelphia as a symbol of Greek ideals and love, a city that unites Hellenism in the diaspora. He expressed hope for continued strengthening of bonds with Greece and the honoring of shared values and heritage.
