It has been two years since the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, which was a milestone for the familiarization of an increasingly large number of people around the planet with the daily use of Artificial Intelligence. During these two years, the terms “Artificial Intelligence” and “machine learning” are not only familiar concepts, but have been integrated into the daily lives of most people around the world. The theoretical discussion about which sectors it will affect and how has passed into the field of application, and education is no exception.
Like everything new, the use of Artificial Intelligence in the field of Education is a challenge that has benefits, but also creates concerns. According to Nikos Panagiotopoulos, Professor of Sociology at the Department of Communication and Media at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, one of the main benefits of using Artificial Intelligence in Education is the possibility of personalized learning. “Thanks to its tools that have been designed specifically for this purpose, each student can benefit from a personalized educational experience, adapted to their pace and lifestyle,” Panagiotopoulos to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA).
Another advantage of using Artificial Intelligence in the educational environment is immediate feedback. “Its tools with machine learning capabilities can quickly evaluate students’ work and provide immediate constructive feedback. A fact that saves valuable time for both teachers and students,” he explained.
However, there are significant concerns that can arise from the use of Artificial Intelligence in Education. According to Panagiotopoulos, one of the biggest challenges is content saturation. “With so much information available thanks to search engines powered by machine learning algorithms, it is easy to become overwhelmed by information,” he noted.
