The Greek Consulate General in New York City was filled with festive melodies and joyful children’s voices on a memorable Friday afternoon. Students from the Saint Demetrios Greek Language School in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, brought the traditional Greek New Year carols to Manhattan, highlighting the enduring legacy of Hellenism in the United States.
Traveling several hours by car, the delegation—comprising students, parents, and teachers—numbered around 50 individuals. The group was led by Rev. Fr. Alexander Kaitidis, community leader John Vasiliou, and members of the community council and faculty. They were warmly welcomed by Iphigeneia Kanara, the Consul General of Greece in New York, alongside Petros Dorizas, Consul of Greece, and Mary Vaxevanidou, Director of Public Diplomacy in New York.
Upon arrival, the children were greeted in the festively decorated consulate. Guests enjoyed traditional Greek Christmas treats such as melomakarona and kourabiedes, along with hot chocolate and coffee.

Consul General Kanara, celebrating her first Christmas in New York, joined the choir, radiating joy and holiday spirit. She also took photos with the children, parents, and teachers, making the event truly memorable.
The event highlighted the resilience and vibrancy of Greek traditions in the diaspora, emphasizing the importance of cultural heritage. Visitors expressed their excitement and gratitude for the warm reception and the opportunity to connect with representatives of Greece.
As the delegation departed for their return trip, Ms. Kanara personally thanked the attendees, including the media representatives such as the Hellenic News of America, and extended heartfelt wishes for a Happy and Prosperous New Year to all.
