Greek police has redirected traffic in central Athens due to a protest at Syntagma Square on Sunday related to the deadly train crash at Tempi.
The protest is organized by the relatives of victims of the accident that took place in February 2023 and claimed the lives of 57 people, many of them college students, when two trains running on the Athens-Thessaloniki line collided.
Protest rallies calling for justice for the victims and punishment of people responsible are also taking place in Thessaloniki and other cities of Greece. The central motto of the rallies is “I have no oxygen,” what one of the victims was recorded as saying in recently publicized documents.
Police said they have stopped traffic on Vassilissis Amalias Avenue, by the Square, from its corner with Diakou Street, while the ‘Syntagma’ Athens Metro station has been shut since 10:00 am and trains go by without stopping.
