Memories of Greece: Lake Plastiras, Thessaly
By Catherine Tsounis
“Lake Plastiras was created because of the efforts of General Nikolaos Plastiras, who was born in Karditsa, Thessaly,” explained our guide. “He was a genuine patriot who believed in peace, promoting the creation of this dam and hydroelectric plant to benefit Thessaly.” We had an enjoyable summer excursion of this amazing lake surrounded by mountains. The lake has crystal clear waters.
A poster shows the spot where General Plastiras originated the idea of an artificial lake in 1925. In 1959 Prime Minister Constantine Karamanlis created the lake that acts as a reservoir. Today the lake holds fresh water that is used for irrigation and a hydroelectric plant. Karditsa main water source comes from the lake , known also as the Tavropos Reservoir.
Our group from Tripoli, Peloponnese, went to Kelepouris Taverna in Neohori, Karditsa. A taverna with a mountainous village décor and a Swiss chalet interior. We enjoyed a meal of local lamb, Greek salad with yogurt, potatoes and homemade country bread. Mr. and Mrs. Vasilis Kelepouris were the gracious proprietors, who made us feel welcome. The restaurant was clean, with beautifully set tables. A wonderful conclusion for an unforgettable excursion to Lake Plastiras.
