Why the Council of Nicaea Still Matters
Convened in 325 A.D. by Emperor Constantine, the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea was a turning point in Christian history. Its enduring legacy includes:
-
Resolving the Arian controversy and affirming the full divinity of Christ
-
Establishing the Nicene Creed, central to Orthodox, Catholic, Anglican, and Protestant traditions
-
Setting a unified date for Easter
-
Issuing 20 canons of Church discipline and governance
-
Recognizing the authority of major sees, creating the framework for conciliar governance
Seventeen centuries later, the Council’s decisions remain foundational to Christian doctrine, unity, and theology worldwide.
