“Europe’s future is closely linked with the accession of the Western Balkans to the European Union” stated Alternate Foreign Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis at the EU-Serbia Intergovernmental Conference that is held on Tuesday in Brussels.
Varvitsiotis underlined that Greece always strongly supported the European prospect of the Western Balkans with initiatives and actions from the Thessaloniki Summit 2003 until today.
In his intervention, Varvitsiotis noted that the accession of the Western Balkans is important for political, economic and safety reasons for the EU adding that is not only another enlargement but a geopolitical strategic choice that will strengthen EU’s role as an important regional and international player.
Regarding Serbia, he said that it is a key-country for EU in the region and has recorded tangible progress by boosting the reforms with emphasis on the rule of law. Efforts that EU recognises today with the opening of clusters 4 of the accession negotiations.
