Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis on Wednesday pointed out the imperative need to take specific initiatives on issues such as climate change, marine protected areas, sustainable fishing, sustainable blue economy, maritime safety and marine pollution in his speech on the first day of the of the 9th Conference for the Oceans, “Our Ocean Conference”, which takes place at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center.
“After all, the oceans and the seas connect us and we should not forget that we are not land owners, but simply land managers,” he said.
Gerapetritis also said that Greece, in its attempt to enrich the agenda of the Conference, decided to focus on four horizontal themes, which run through the six areas of action: sustainable tourism in coastal areas and islands, green shipping, the reduction of marine plastics and microplastics and the green transition in the Mediterranean.
Greece wants to confirm its commitment to the transition to the blue economy and to highlight the advantages of a new balance between economic growth, social cohesion and sustainability”, noted the Foreign Minister and added: “Our aim is to give incentives for tangible action and to announce commitments, both regionally and globally, on all major issues affecting the oceans and seas.”
