Greece experienced the hottest summer and the hottest winter in its history in 2024, according to the records of the network of automatic meteorological stations of meteo.gr/National Observatory of Athens.
In particular:
– The highest temperature of the year was 44.5 degrees Celsius and was recorded in Voukolies, Chania, on June 13.
– The lowest temperature of the year (outside of ski resorts) was recorded in Neos Kafkasos, Florina, on 22 January and was -19.8 degrees Celsius.
– The lowest temperature was recorded at sinkhole Vathistalos Parnassos Mount on 12 January and was -23.2 degrees Celsius.
– The highest daily rainfall of the year was recorded on 1 December at Simonopetra Athos peninsula and was 435 mm.
– 2160 mm was the annual rainfall in Askyfu, Chania.
– The winter of 2023-2024 was the warmest in Greece’s history.
– The summer of 2024 was the hottest in Greece’s history.
– 31 weather events with significant social and economic impacts occurred in 2023, a number higher than the average for the period 2000-2024.
– 9 human casualties occurred in 2024, a number below the average for the period 2000-2024.
