The earthquakes in Santorini and Amorgos, a cancer registry, wages, and a new online portal for business owners were among the issues mentioned by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in his weekly social meda review of government action posted on Sunday.
Referring to his visit to Santorini on Friday, the premier said, “The specialists monitoring the phenomenon constantly – and I should note here that we have excellent scientists – give us reason to be a bit more optimistic as days progress. Nobody can forecast anything with absolute certainty, but there is cautious optimism that we will not end up with a worst-case scenario.” He also reminded that MySafetyPlan on the gov.gr platform inaugurated this past Wednesday shows all open spaces that residents throughout Greece can resort to in case of strong earthquakes.
The new and emblematic, as he said, “National Registry of Neoplasmatic Illnesses”, has been a long-standing demand of doctors and patients for the better response to tumor therapy, and is a valuable data base using data from Greece instead of relying on data from abroad alone. Oncologists will soon be invited to add to it. In addition, Mitsotakis noted, the implementation of 12 oncological and haematological therapy protocols will be introduced nationally in Greece by the end of February.
The premier reiterated data released in the last few days of the raise in salaries, noting that in December 2024 the average wage rose to 1,342 euros compared to 1,046 euros in 2019. “It is the first time since wage records were kept on the Ergani system where more than half of all full-time employees receive a wage above 1,000 euros,” noting that wages in Greece are increasing while more women are joining the labor force, reducing the gap between employed men and women.
Private debt has improved tremendously, dropping to 67 billion euros in the third quarter of 2024 from 92 billion euros in 2019, Mitsotakis said, while more people choose to pay their debts under the payment plans, while the increased number of out-of-court settlements has contributed in key ways to reducing private debt. At the same time, the government is offering more options to those with debts up to 300,000 euros, he added.
Mitsotakis also spoke of the new online system OpenBusiness, which simplifies administrative procedures when setting up a new business and digitizing 57 of them.
Accessed at https://openbusiness.mindev.gov.gr, the system has brought 850 public agencies and local goverments on board as well, serving as a go-to point while communicating with other public administration platforms (Taxisnet, e-paravolo, GEMI, e-adeies).
The premier also referred to improvements in court that speed up decisions and make the system more efficient, citing as example the fact that with the transfer of a lot of court material to lawyers, over 200,000 of transactions were completed in a few months.
