“ Two years have passed since the night of February 28, 2023, which was destined to indelibly mark our collective memory with the Tempi tragedy. Everyone’s thoughts are with the families of the 57 victims, with the injured, but also with those who survived this accident, forever carrying within them the wound of its memory,” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in a post on Friday.
“ That night, we saw the ugliest face of the country in the national mirror. Fatal human errors combined with chronic state inadequacies and violently derailed our certitudes. Nothing will ever be the same again. And this, precisely, shows the magnitude of the battle we have to fight until the ‘deep state’ of the past is defeated,” Mitsotakis noted and added:
“Every Greek man and woman joins in this mourning, united under the common demand for truth and catharsis. A moral redemption that only independent Justice can give society. Far from the partisan exploitation of human suffering but also with the maturity of a country that seeks certainty, consistency and progress.
“This is also the reason why the majority of citizens, whether they demonstrate or silently honour the memory of Tempi, converge on one observation, I think: that an accident that hurt their hearts should not become a weapon for some to hurt the internal cohesion and the stable course of the country in the future.
“An observation that for the government is turning into a heavy task: to move forward more dynamically and quickly with changes that will lead to modern and safe trains, to more effective public services. And to an improved daily life for all. This is our commitment,” the prime minister concluded in his post.
