Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis, in his statements after the end of the informal five-party meeting on the Cyprus issue held in Geneva, described as extremely important the fact that the issue is a major priority of the UN.
He stressed that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, following coordinated efforts by the Republic of Cyprus and the Greek government, has recently made the resumption of informal discussions on the Cyprus issue a major priority of the UN.
Regarding the five-party meeting held in Geneva, he stressed that the discussion focused on measures to build trust between the parties, demining, environmental protection, youth issues and the restoration of cemeteries.
Gerapetritis stressed that a new special envoy for the Cyprus issue will be appointed by the UN Secretary-General. “It is extremely important that at the moment the Cyprus issue is at the top of the UN agenda. There will be a continuation of the informal meetings, both bilaterally and in the format of the Quintet,” he said, noting that there will be a new Quintet meeting at the end of July.
“We understand that despite the fact that the position of the Turkish Cypriot side is on a different line compared to the framework set by the UN Security Council resolutions, it is extremely important to have the dialogue to build confidence. The only solution is the reunification of the island,” Gerapetritis concluded.
