CHICAGO — March 7, 2026 — In a powerful evening celebrating leadership, philanthropy, and the enduring spirit of Hellenism, The Hellenic Initiative honored John P. Calamos Sr. with its prestigious Hellenic Lifetime Achievement Award during a special private gathering held at the iconic United Center.
The evening was hosted by John S. Koudounis on behalf of The Hellenic Initiative, bringing together leaders of the Greek diaspora from across the United States and around the world. The private gathering honoring Calamos set the stage for a historic moment that followed at the arena, where thousands came together for a landmark concert featuring award-winning Greek artist Konstantinos Argiros, produced by Dream Hospitality Group. The extraordinary evening united music, philanthropy, and Hellenic pride, amplifying a powerful message of solidarity and collective commitment to Greece’s future.

Calamos, founder of Calamos Investments, has long been recognized as a pioneer in the financial industry, a decorated U.S. Air Force veteran who flew more than 400 combat missions during the Vietnam War, and a devoted supporter of philanthropic and cultural initiatives benefiting Greece and the Greek-American community.
Accepting the award, Calamos expressed gratitude for the recognition and emphasized the importance of preserving Hellenic heritage for future generations.
“I truly appreciate this recognition and the work that The Hellenic Initiative is doing,” Calamos said. “One of our missions must be to educate the next generation about the importance of our heritage. The future really depends on what the next generation believes and carries forward.”
The evening also highlighted the broader mission of The Hellenic Initiative, which was founded to unite the global Greek diaspora in support of Greece during times of crisis and to promote long-term humanitarian and economic initiatives.

Mike Manatos reflected on the organization’s impact over the past decade.
“The mission of The Hellenic Initiative is to unite Greeks around the globe around the preservation of Hellenism and giving back to Greece,” Manatos said. “In our first thirteen years we’ve given more than $25 million to the people of Greece through humanitarian and economic support.”
He also stressed the importance of engaging younger generations of the diaspora.
“Anyone born with Greek DNA is born with a pilot light of Hellenism within them. Our responsibility is to ignite it.”
Leaders of The Hellenic Initiative also emphasized the historic significance of the evening for the global Greek diaspora.

Michael Psaros described the gathering as one of the most important moments for the Greek-American community in recent years.
“Tonight is one of the most important events in the history of the Hellenic diaspora in the United States,” Psaros said. “Almost 13,000 Hellenes from across the diaspora have come together to celebrate our culture, our roots, our heritage, our religion, Hellenism, and the Hellenic ideal.”
Psaros also highlighted the presence of younger generations in the audience as one of the most encouraging aspects of the evening.
“Thousands and thousands of young people are here tonight, and in many respects that is what this is all about inspiring the next generation.”
George Stamas spoke about why Chicago was chosen to host the historic gathering.
“Chicago is considered the most important Greek diaspora city in North America in terms of philanthropy and wealth,” Stamas said. “The community here carries forward an extraordinary tradition of generosity and cultural leadership.”
Members of the organization’s leadership also reflected on the significance of Calamos’ legacy.
Peter Parthenis Jr. described Calamos as a transformative figure whose influence extends far beyond the financial world.
“John Calamos is a true visionary, a titan in his industry, and an extraordinary leader whose impact extends far beyond his remarkable success in business,” Parthenis said. “Throughout his career, he has remained deeply committed to giving back and uplifting the Greek community. This Lifetime Achievement Award is incredibly well deserved and reflects a lifetime of achievement, leadership, and generosity.”

Among those reflecting on Calamos’ legacy was Father Alex Karloutsos, who praised both his service and character.
“John Calamos is a man of extraordinary character and service,” Father Alex said. “What he has done for this country, serving in Vietnam, and what he continues to do through his philanthropy reflects a life dedicated to purpose.”
Referencing the words of Cardinal Newman, he added:
“If you have nothing worth dying for, you have nothing worth living for. John Calamos embodies that spirit.”
The evening also underscored the extraordinary generosity and commitment of the Greek diaspora. Through the leadership of John S. Koudounis and the collective support of attendees, more than $1 million was raised in a single evening to support the mission and programs of The Hellenic Initiative.
As host of the evening, Koudounis reflected on the significance of bringing together members of the global Greek diaspora in Chicago for such a meaningful cause. He noted that The Hellenic Initiative represents a powerful example of Greeks around the world uniting to support the people of Greece and ensure that the country’s rich civilization and heritage continue to thrive. The sold-out gathering demonstrated the strength of Chicago’s Greek community, one of the largest and most influential in the diaspora, and highlighted the importance of business leaders and community members giving back when they are able.
For Koudounis, the evening was not only about honoring John P. Calamos Sr., but also about demonstrating the power of the Greek diaspora to come together in support of Greece while celebrating its shared heritage and identity. The historic gathering ultimately reaffirmed that when the Greek diaspora unites around a common purpose, its ability to inspire, give back, and shape the future of Hellenism is extraordinary.
